In an emergency session held today, July 26, 2023, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Ilocos Norte declared a state of calamity over the province in response to the devastating impact of Super Typhoon "Egay," known internationally as "Doksuri."
As of 2:00 p.m. today, July 26, 2023, the municipalities of Burgos, Bangui, Dumalneg, Pagudpud, Vintar, Adams, Pasuquin, and Bacarra remain under Signal No. 4, while the rest of the province is under Signal No. 3 as the typhoon continues to wreak havoc across the region. The super typhoon brought heavy rainfall and flooding to low-lying areas, resulting in power and communication interruptions, as well as road blockages throughout the province. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
With the declaration of the state of calamity, the provincial government can now swiftly and efficiently mobilize resources to aid the affected residents in their time of need. Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc is urging all residents to remain vigilant and to follow safety advisories. Evacuation measures have been put in place to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further casualties.
Moreover, the Provincial Government is calling on the Ilokano community to cooperate with the government's directives and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this critical time. The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, in collaboration with the PDRRMO, has already launched ongoing relief operations in the severely affected municipalities. These operations aim to provide much-needed assistance and support to those who have been heavily impacted by the disaster.
The situation remains critical, and authorities are working tirelessly to address the challenges brought about by Super Typhoon "Egay" (Doksuri). The state of calamity empowers the province to access additional resources and funding, enabling them to respond effectively to the crisis.
