A wedding hall fire in the Al-Hamdaniya district (Baghdida) in Nineveh Governorate in Iraq has left at least 100 people dead.
Civil Defense units were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they confronted a raging fire that had engulfed the wedding hall.
The use of highly flammable Ecobond panels in violation of safety regulations exacerbated the situation. There was also the absence of necessary safety features such as wet alarms and firefighting systems in the Al-Hamdaniya area.
The fire's rapid spread was initially sparked by fireworks used during the wedding ceremony. This, coupled with toxic gas emissions resulting from the burning Ecobond plastic panels, contributed to the severity of the incident, causing casualties and injuries.
The tragedy has prompted a nationwide call for heightened safety awareness and stricter adherence to safety regulations in public venues.
Iraq's Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al Sudani, directed all ministries, governorates, and state institutions to take “immediate and decisive measures” to address the aftermath of the incident.
