In an exciting turn of events, Jolo Mendoza, a talented guard from Ateneo, expressed his desire to remain with the Converge team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) once he applies for the upcoming rookie draft.
The 25-year-old player, who recently showcased his skills in a game against Phoenix for the PBA On Tour, has nothing but admiration for Converge coach Aldin Ayo, whom he described as a "phenomenal coach."
Mendoza spoke highly of Coach Aldin Ayo's coaching philosophies, emphasizing the valuable lessons he has learned from the UAAP and NCAA champion coach. "Iba yung philosophies niya e," Mendoza remarked. "Kaya very thankful ako na na-experience ko yung way of training niya kasi ang dami kong napupulot." (His philosophies are different, that's why I'm very thankful to have experienced his training methods because I've learned a lot.)
Despite not having practiced much recently, the former Batang Gilas standout demonstrated his capabilities during a game against Phoenix, leading Converge to a resounding 104-90 victory. Mendoza's impressive performance included hitting 7-of-12 shots from beyond the arc, tallying a game-high 26 points. With this win, Converge improved their preseason record to 4-4.
Acknowledging that he is still on the path to returning to his peak playing form, the 5-foot-9 guard revealed his plan to apply for the Season 48 PBA draft in September. Moreover, Mendoza expressed his strong desire to continue representing the same franchise he is currently playing for: Converge.
"Of course, [I would love to play for Converge]. Having been able to play for Coach Aldin after going against him in the UAAP for so long," Mendoza stated, highlighting his eagerness to continue working under Coach Ayo's guidance.
The feeling appears to be mutual, as Coach Aldin Ayo expressed interest in acquiring Mendoza if he is still available when the FiberXers get their turn to make a pick in the draft. "Pag umabot siya siguro sa spots namin, we might get him," said the Converge coach, suggesting that they would consider selecting Mendoza if he is still on the board during their draft turn.
As Mendoza prepares for the upcoming PBA rookie draft, fans of both Converge and the talented guard eagerly await the outcome, hoping to see the continuation of their successful partnership in the professional basketball scene.
