Journalist And Family Members Attacked By Gunmen In Quezon City

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director, Police Brigadier General Nicolas D Torre III, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into a shooting incident that occurred on June 29, 2023, along Corumi St., corner Gazan St., Brgy. Masambong, Quezon City. The incident took place at approximately 3:00 PM.

The victims have been identified as Renato Abiad Jr., 41 years old; Rene Joshua Abiad, 37 years old; Cheryl Abiad, 42 years old; Elizabeth Abiad, 37 years old; and three minors aged 4, 6, and 8, all residents of Brgy. Masambong, Quezon City. Another victim, Jeffrey Ngo Cao, 47 years old and a resident of Brgy. Apolonio Samson, Quezon City, was also involved.

According to the report, while the Abiad family was inside their Ford Everest vehicle, the suspects suddenly appeared. They got out of their Toyota Vios and motorcycle, and began firing their guns towards the victim's vehicle. Another bystander Jeffrey Ngo Cao was struck by a stray bullet. Immediately after the incident, the suspects fled towards Del Monte Ave., Quezon City, using their getaway vehicle. Despite his injury, victim Renato Abiad managed to drive and rush his family to Capitol Medical Center for medical treatment.

The QCPD, under the leadership of PBGEN Torre III, is conducting a thorough investigation and continuous manhunt operation to apprehend the suspects. They urge anyone with relevant information that could aid in resolving the case to report to the nearest police station.

In response to the incident, Mayor Joy Belmonte issued a statement on behalf of the Quezon City Local Government Unit, expressing outrage and condemnation. She emphasized that violence and intimidation have no place in Quezon City, whether directed at members of the media or anyone else. The Mayor assured the public that the perpetrators of this crime would be held accountable.

The National Press Club (NPC) also strongly condemned the shooting of photo-journalist Joshua Abad and three of his relatives in front of their residence in Quezon City. Usec. Paul Gutierrez, Executive Director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security, has pledged full cooperation with the authorities in conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

Joshua Abad is an active member of the National Press Club and has been revealed to be a witness in drug-related cases involving the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Philippine National Police (PNP).

The incident has been strongly condemned by the NCRPO press club, with its President, Lily Reyes, leading the denouncement.
