Kaliwa Dam Project To Start Operations By December 2026
MANILA – The New Centennial Water Source - Kaliwa Dam Project (NCWS-KDP) is expected to start operations and generate 600 million liters per day (MLD) of water by December 2026, according to the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).
During the multi-stakeholder information forum on Wednesday, MWSS administrator Leonor Cleofas said tunnel boring has begun from Teresa town to Morong town in Rizal province, covering 22 km.
Cleofas said 42 families who would be affected by the construction of the tunnel for the KDP are now being taken care of by concerned government agencies.
She added that the peace and order situation in the area has contributed to the delay in the construction of the project, such as when communist insurgents harass and intimidate indigenous people living in the area.
However, Cleofas said the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) and the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) have addressed this problem.
MWSS chairman of the Board of Trustees Justice Elpidio Vega said “many studies have shown that the Kaliwa Dam is a viable option for preventing water shortage problems in the medium to long term.”
He recalled that Metro Manila experienced water shortages in 2019.
Vega said with the completion of Phase 1 of the New Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project in Barangay Calawis in Antipolo City, Rizal, an additional 80 MLD of water are readily available for supply to Manila Water consumers. (PNA)
