Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Representative from California, was removed from his position as Speaker of the House in the U.S. in a contentious vote.
McCarthy delivered a statement as he exited the chamber, expressing gratitude for his service to the American people and a commitment to continue his fight for the betterment of the country.
"I may have lost a vote today, but as I walk out of this chamber, I feel fortunate to have served the American people," McCarthy stated. "I'll leave the speakership with a sense of pride, accomplishments, and optimism. From the day I entered politics, my mission has always been to make tomorrow better than today. I fought for what I believe in—and I believe in this country of America. My goals have not changed; my ability to fight is just in a different form."
McCarthy's announcement that he will not seek re-election as Speaker of the House took many by surprise.
When asked by a reporter whether he plans to remain a member of Congress, McCarthy responded, "I'll look at that."
Kevin McCarthy had been elected as House Speaker in January of this year, and his tenure has been marked by significant challenges and political divisions.
