Quezon City, Aug. 20, 2023 – In a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of the late Filipino actor Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ), the Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 Roosevelt Station in Quezon City has been officially renamed the "Fernando Poe Jr. Station" starting today, Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023. This renaming comes as a result of Republic Act (RA) 11608, a legislative enactment that celebrates FPJ's contributions to Philippine cinema, politics, and society.
Fernando Poe Jr., affectionately known as "Da King," was born on Aug. 20, 1939, and tragically passed away on Dec. 14, 2004. His artistic prowess spanned across numerous domains, as he excelled not only as an accomplished actor but also as a film director, producer, screenwriter, and politician.
Through his cinematic works and his passionate advocacy for the welfare of the Filipino masses, FPJ left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural and political landscape. The renaming ceremony was graced by the presence of Senator Grace Poe, the daughter of Fernando Poe Jr., who has been an ardent custodian of her father's legacy.
Senator Poe attended the launch of the newly christened station and took to Facebook to share the poignant moment. Alongside photos capturing the ceremony, she posted a heartfelt caption that resonated with the sentiment behind the renaming.
"Sa bawat pasaherong bababa at sasakay sa FPJ Station, sana ay maalala ninyo ang puso ni Da King para sa masang Pilipino," wrote Senator Poe. Her words encouraged commuters to reflect on the profound dedication that FPJ held for the Filipino people.
She continued, "Isang hamon para sa DOTr at LRTA ang pagbibigay ng maayos at komportableng byahe ay isang paraan ng pagbibigay-pugay sa kanyang legasiya," underscoring the significance of providing a seamless and comfortable journey for every passenger as a tribute to her father's legacy.
