A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck Calaca, Batangas today October 13, 2023, sending shockwaves through the region.
The quake, which occurred at 08:24:16 AM local time, originated from a tectonic source with a depth of focus of 6 kilometers below the Earth's surface.
The epicenter was located at coordinates 13.79°N latitude and 120.79°E longitude, approximately 15 kilometers south 10 degrees west of the City of Calaca.
The tremor was felt strongly in several areas, with Batangas City, City of Calaca, and Lemery in Batangas experiencing intensity V shaking.
Intensity IV shaking was reported in the City of Muntinlupa, Alitagtag, Balayan, Bauan, Calatagan, Lian, Mabini, Mataasnakahoy, San Luis, Santa Teresita, Taal, Tingloy, and Tuy in Batangas, as well as Alfonso in Cavite.
Intensity III shaking was felt in various municipalities in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna, while Intensity II and Intensity I shaking affected several cities and towns in the surrounding regions.
Instrumental intensities also indicated significant shaking, with Lemery in Batangas experiencing Intensity V, and several areas in Batangas, Cavite, Quezon, Laguna, Rizal, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro registering lower intensities.
Residents reported feeling strong tremors and evacuations were carried out promptly in several areas. While there are currently no reports of casualties, damage to infrastructure and properties is expected. Emergency services have been deployed to assess the situation and provide assistance where necessary.
Seismologists have warned residents to remain vigilant as aftershocks are anticipated following the main quake.
