In the aftermath of a powerful magnitude 7.4 offshore earthquake striking Surigao Del Sur, Tandag City has mobilized its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) Team. The team has been deployed to assess the impact on areas and barangays most likely affected by the earthquake.
The ongoing field assessment is crucial to identifying the immediate priority response needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), focusing on humanitarian assistance, as well as the urgent requirements for rehabilitation and recovery management services in the affected regions. The city, along with the CDRRMO and RDANA Team, remains on FULL ALERT as tremors and aftershocks persist.
Residents of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, were compelled to evacuate their homes following a subsequent magnitude 6.9 earthquake recorded at 10:37 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 2, 2023). A netizen shared alarming photos on social media, capturing damages and reporting a force evacuation due to a tsunami alert.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a preliminary tsunami warning following the initial earthquake. However, subsequent monitoring confirmed the occurrence of a tsunami with varying wave heights. The last recorded wave arrival at Hinatuan-Bislig Bay Station on Mawes Island occurred at 02:52 AM (PST).
As a result, DOST-PHIVOLCS has officially cancelled all Tsunami Warnings associated with the Mw 7.4 Offshore Surigao del Sur Earthquake. Coastal communities in Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental are now advised to assess the tsunami's impact and inform the coastal population accordingly. People in threatened areas are urged to follow instructions from local officials as they safely resume normal activities. Boats at sea should heed instructions from the Coast Guard or port authorities as they return to the coast.
This concludes the final tsunami information issued for this event. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.
