Sto Domingo, Albay, Mayor Jun Aguas released a statement on the municipality's commitment to the safety and well-being of its constituents. With the increasing volcanic unrest of Mayon Volcano, the decision has been made to implement a mandatory evacuation for the vulnerable population residing within the 7-8 km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ).
Mayor Jun Aguas said "Resources can be sourced out, but we cannot bring back people's lives." This decision aims to safeguard the residents and minimize the potential risks posed by the volcano's activity.
The local government has coordinated with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) to ensure a well-executed and orderly evacuation process. Effective from tomorrow, June 21, 2023, residents from Barangays Lidong, Fidel Surtida, Sta. Misericordia, and San Fernando are required to evacuate to designated safe areas.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant. The local government is fully prepared to assist and support the evacuees during this challenging time. Additionally, individuals who prefer to stay at evacuation camps or alternative safe locations should inform their respective barangay officials for appropriate coordination.
While ensuring the safety of residents within the 7-8 km EDZ, the local authorities also urge people to refrain from entering the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to potential hazards such as ashfall, lava flow, and Pyroclastic Density Currents. Furthermore, residents living along Basud and Telegrapo rivers are advised to stay alert for possible sudden lahar flows, particularly during heavy rainfall.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) and Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMCs) will continue to monitor the situation and maintain a state of readiness.
