In response to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin pledged prompt action against agricultural syndicates engaged in smuggling and hoarding of food products.
During his second SONA on Monday, President Marcos issued a stern warning to smugglers and hoarders, declaring "that their days are numbered."
Speaking in an interview, Bersamin assured the public that cases against those responsible for smuggling and food hoarding will be filed in the near future. The government has thoroughly validated intelligence reports revealing the identities of these illicit actors, with some of them having been known even during previous administrations. "These smugglers and hoarders have repeatedly engaged in unlawful activities, posing significant threats to both our economy and public health," Bersamin emphasized, urging decisive action against them.
The Executive Secretary also highlighted President Marcos' directive to the Department of Justice to establish a task force specifically dedicated to combating smuggling. While the task force is actively gathering evidence, no reports have been forwarded to the Office of the President (OP) as of yet.
"This is a personal commitment of the President to bring these culprits to justice," stated Bersamin, affirming the President's unwavering determination to address smuggling and economic sabotage.
When questioned about the timeline for legal proceedings, Bersamin clarified that the pace of action would depend on the strength of the evidence gathered. As the task force diligently works to compile relevant information, it is anticipated that charges will be filed as soon as possible.
