In a recent interview on the state-run PTV network, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Assistant Secretary Wilben Mayor emphasized the substantial benefits of a lasting peace agreement between the government and communist rebels for rural areas and local government units (LGUs).
Mayor pointed to the successful peace pact with Muslim separatists in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as a notable example. According to him, this agreement resulted in a significant reduction in poverty incidence in the region, dropping from 61.7 percent to around 37 percent.
"Ang digmaan po ay wala pong idinudolot na mabuti," Mayor emphasized, drawing attention to the devastating losses experienced in conflicts like the Ukraine-Russia war and the Israeli offensive against the Hamas militant group.
He further rallied for support from government agencies and the public in ongoing exploratory talks between the government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP). President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who initiated discussions with the rebels upon assuming office, envisions a peaceful country as a prerequisite for development.
"Kami po ay nanawagan sa tuloy-tuloy nyong pagsuporta sa prosesong pangkapayapaan," Mayor urged, echoing the president's desire for genuine and lasting peace for the progress of the New Philippines.
The Philippine government and the NDFP recently agreed to commence talks for a principled and peaceful resolution to the armed conflict, culminating in the signing of the "Oslo Joint Communique" on November 23 in Norway. The announcement of this significant development was made by Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. last week.
