President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has reiterated the Philippines’ commitment to working towards peace and maintaining its neutrality amid rising tensions in the region.

Speaking to the press on Sunday en route to Washington D.C., the President expressed his assurance that the Philippines will not be used as a “staging post” for any military action by any country.

The President’s remarks come as he prepares to discuss the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the Philippines and the United States, which he described as “evolving.” He emphasized that the Philippines’ goal is to work for peace and not encourage any provocative action that would involve the country.

The President also highlighted the importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in keeping peace and lowering tensions in the region. He stressed that staying within ASEAN and keeping it strong and united is the best move for the Philippines.

Earlier, the President witnessed the culminating event of this year’s “Balikatan” exercises, the largest annual joint exercise between the Philippines and the US. The exercises aim to enhance bilateral capacities in areas such as maritime security, cyber defense, and counterterrorism.
