Massive Earthquake Rocks Marrakesh, Morocco, Leaving Scores Dead And Injured

Multiple sources are reporting a devastating earthquake in the vicinity of Marrakesh, Morocco. The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, struck approximately 48 miles (77 km) south-southwest of Marrakesh on the night of Friday, September 8, shortly after 11:00 PM local time.
The aftermath of this seismic event has been tragic, with at least 296 confirmed fatalities and an estimated 1,500 individuals suffering injuries in the affected region. Among the injured, at least 153 have been hospitalized.
The impact of the earthquake has been felt across various areas, with Al Haouz reporting at least 94 fatalities, Chichaoua recording six deaths, Azilal documenting five casualties, and four each in Marrakech, Ouarzazate, and two in Agadir. Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue.
In Marrakesh, the situation is dire, as several buildings have collapsed and an unspecified number of structures have sustained damage. Power outages have been reported throughout the city, adding to the chaos. Near the Moulay el Yazid Mosque, two people were injured due to a partial building collapse. An unspecified number of individuals have been evacuated from buildings across the city as a precautionary measure.
The effects of this earthquake have also been felt in neighboring areas, with reports of one house collapsing in Taliouine and five people losing their lives in a building collapse in Demnat.
Emergency services are working tirelessly to manage the crisis, but disruptions are expected as they operate in the affected regions.
