Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairman and Resident Representative Silvestre Bello III assured the public on Saturday that Filipinos in Taiwan are safe and secure amid tensions between Taiwan and China. Speaking at a media forum in Quezon City, Bello said that the Philippine government, through MECO, is keeping an eye on the welfare and well-being of Filipinos in Taiwan.
He added that the National Police Agency of Taiwan has assured him that Filipinos in the self-ruled island nation are protected and secure.
Bello noted that Taiwan is prepared to protect its people, including Filipinos, in the event of an emergency situation such as earthquakes or war. He added that Taiwan has 89,000 shelters that can accommodate more than the total population of Taiwan, and that the government highly values the contribution of Filipino workers in the manufacturing industry, with 90 percent of factories in Taiwan being serviced by Filipinos.
Bello's statement comes after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. raised the need to continue developing cooperation on an international scale to resolve soaring tensions in Taiwan. The president emphasized that the Philippines shall continue to be a friend to all and an enemy of none.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has also reassured the public that contingency plans are in place in areas where there is a high concentration of Filipino workers, including Taiwan. The DFA also reported that no Filipino in Taiwan is seeking government help for repatriation amid the current cross-strait tensions.
MECO is the designated instrumentality to promote and protect Philippine interests in Taiwan and perform functions usually carried out by Philippine foreign missions but of a non-political, non-security in nature.
