In response to rising costs in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) will be implementing an additional charge on electricity consumption starting this January.

Effective this month, MERALCO customers will experience an increase of +P0.0846 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), contributing to an overall rate adjustment of P11.34. The added charges will vary according to the level of electricity consumption:

For 200 kWh, an additional P17 will be applied.
For 300 kWh, customers will see an increase of P25.
Those consuming 400 kWh will face an additional charge of P34.

Customers with a consumption of 500 kWh can expect a P42 increment.

The spike in the generation charge is attributed to the recent surge in costs within the WESM, prompting MERALCO to adjust its rates accordingly. The electricity provider foresees the likelihood of continued rate hikes as the summer season approaches, historically associated with increased electricity charges.

Despite these adjustments, MERALCO assures its consumers that there is no imminent threat of yellow or red alerts affecting the supply of electricity. The company ensures that there is a reliable and ample power supply to meet the demands of consumers during the upcoming summer season.
