Meta Imitates Twitter as it announces Paid Subscription Service
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a new subscription bundle called Meta Verified.
This offering is designed to help up-and-coming creators establish their presence and build their communities on these social media platforms.
The subscription includes a verified badge, proactive account protection, access to account support, increased visibility, and exclusive features to express oneself in unique ways.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, said that the company has been receiving numerous requests from creators for broader access to verification, account support, and more features to increase visibility and reach.
The verified badge is one of the main features of the subscription bundle. This badge authenticates the account with government ID, confirming that the user is the real person behind the account.
The proactive account protection feature provides more protection from impersonation, making it more difficult for impersonators to target people with growing online audiences.
Users can also access account support through a real person for common account issues.
The subscription bundle also offers increased visibility and reach, with prominence in some areas of the platform, such as search, comments, and recommendations. In addition, subscribers can enjoy exclusive features to express themselves in unique ways.
Meta Verified will be available for purchase on Instagram and Facebook in Australia and New Zealand.
Users can purchase a monthly subscription for $11.99 on the web and $14.99 on iOS and Android. The company plans to gradually test the offering in these two countries to determine what is most valuable before expanding it to the rest of the world.
Meta is building safety checks into the Meta Verified offering to ensure that users' identity and accounts are safe.
Accounts must meet minimum activity requirements and be at least 18 years old to be eligible. Applicants will be required to submit a government ID that matches the profile name and photo of the Facebook or Instagram account they are applying for.
Meta Verified is currently not available for businesses, and users cannot change their profile name, username, date of birth, or photo on their profile once it is verified without going through the Meta Verified subscription and verification application process again.
