Manila, June 2, 2023 - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Taguig City Government joined forces today to address the ongoing issue of flooding caused by poor waste management. They urged the public to break the dumping-cleaning cycle by changing their mindset when it comes to solid waste disposal.

Under the leadership of MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, a massive cleanup operation was conducted at Hagonoy Creek/Retarding Pool, situated near the Hagonoy Pumping Station in Taguig City. The area has been a hotspot for trash accumulation, with approximately 12 tons of waste being collected annually. This amounts to around 600 kilos of garbage each day.

Highlighting the importance of collective responsibility, Atty. Don Artes emphasized that effective solid waste management is not solely the government's duty. "All of us must work together and ensure that waste is properly managed and disposed of to prevent flooding," he stated. Artes further added that instead of responsibly disposing of their trash, some individuals choose the easy way out by dumping it into waterways.

"It is high time that people break the dumping and cleaning cycle by changing their mindset about managing their waste," Atty. Artes urged. He appealed to the public to help mitigate flooding by refraining from indiscriminate waste disposal along streets and waterways. Proper waste segregation at the source and efficient garbage collection at the local level were identified as key elements of effective solid waste management.
The cleanup drive led by the MMDA requires substantial resources, including heavy equipment and manpower. While the agency is intensifying its efforts to combat flooding, Atty. Artes emphasized that it is essential for the public to fulfill their part by maintaining cleanliness and practicing proper waste disposal.

In parallel, all 71 pumping stations managed by the MMDA are currently operating at full capacity, ensuring their readiness to handle any flood-related concerns.

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano expressed her gratitude to Atty. Don Artes for personally overseeing the cleanup operations in collaboration with the city government. Cayetano emphasized that the MMDA's cleanup initiatives are not limited to seasonal events but are continuous efforts aimed at preventing flooding throughout Metro Manila.

Calling for individual responsibility, Mayor Lani Cayetano urged Taguig City residents to contribute to a flood-free community. She reminded them that the garbage collected from Hagonoy Creek originates from nine barangays and that their cooperation is crucial. Cayetano expressed disappointment over the fact that some individuals even dispose of large furniture and appliances improperly.

"Some people's irresponsible trash management, which results in flooding, impacts others in the community—students going to school, workers going to work, and business operations," said Mayor Cayetano. She also highlighted that littering the streets and waterways is a violation of the city ordinance and carries penalties.
