Motorcycle Riders Obstructing Major Roads During Heavy Rainfall Penalized

In an effort to address the obstruction of major roads during heavy rain, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) started penalizing motorcycle riders gathering under bridges and footbridges to seek shelter from the downpour.

CCTV monitoring at the MMDA Communications and Command Center captured several motorcyclists occupying nearly three lanes of EDSA in Quezon City as they sought refuge from the rain. Despite wearing raincoats, many of them lingered and did not immediately leave the sheltered areas beneath the footbridges.

According to Atty. Victor Nuñez, the Director for Enforcement of the MMDA Traffic Discipline Office, this kind of behavior poses a safety hazard as it blocks the passage of other motorists, increasing the risk of accidents. Several riders were fined for violating obstruction and illegal parking regulations.

Atty. Nuñez emphasized that the implementation of this measure aims to ensure the safety of all motorists and prevent road accidents. Motorcycle riders were also reminded to carry raincoats before leaving their homes and to exercise proper road etiquette to avoid any inconvenience or danger on the streets.
