Judge Gener Gito of Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court Branch 206 granted bail to former Senator Leila de Lima on Monday. The decision comes after nearly seven years of detention, a period marked by legal battles and public outcry.
The court session saw the presence of key legal representatives, including Deputy City Prosecutor Darwin G. Cañete and counsels for the accused. Notably, accused Bucayu was granted a ten-day period to file a reply to the Motion to Quash the Information.
The prosecution was given five days to complete the submission of documentary exhibits, with a scheduled remarking on November 23, 2023, at 2:00 PM. The defense, in turn, was granted ten days from the receipt of complete exhibits to file their respective comments/oppositions.
In response to the court's decision, the Movement Against Disinformation (MAD) released a statement expressing sincere gratitude and relief. MAD highlighted the significance of the Judge's determination that the evidence against Senator De Lima is not strong, emphasizing the principles of fairness, equity, and the Rule of Law.
Tony La Viña, one of the lawyers of the jailed ex-senator, stated, "This long-awaited decision not only reaffirms our confidence in the legal system but also underscores the fundamental principles of fairness, equity, and the Rule of Law."
The statement also calls for accountability for those responsible for the perceived injustice. MAD looks forward to the complete resolution of all remaining cases against Senator De Lima, expressing hope for her full exoneration. The organization remains steadfast in its call for the release of Senator Leila De Lima and all political prisoners.
