US President Joe Biden arrived in Israel today October 18, 2023, greeted by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Ben-Gurion International Airport.
The two leaders later issued statements at the Kempinski Hotel in Tel Aviv, addressing the deepening partnership between the United States and Israel, as well as the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Prime Minister Netanyahu began by expressing his gratitude to President Biden, saying, "Mr. President, for the people of Israel, there's only one thing better than having a true friend like you standing with Israel, and that is having you standing in Israel. Your visit here is the first visit of an American President in Israel in a time of war. It is deeply moving. It speaks to the depth of your personal commitment to Israel and the future of the Jewish people and the one and only Jewish state. So, I know I speak for all the people of Israel when I say, 'Thank you, Mr. President, thank you for standing with Israel today, tomorrow, and always.'"
President Biden, in turn, emphasized the significance of his visit, stating, "I want to be here today for a simple reason. I want the people of Israel, the people of the world to know that the US stands with you. I wanted to personally come and make that clear. Terrorist group Hamas has slaughtered over 1,300 people, including 31 Americans, and they've taken scores of people hostage, including children. You said, 'Imagine what those children hiding from Hamas were thinking.' It's beyond my comprehension to be able to imagine what they're thinking. They've committed evils and atrocities that make ISIS look somewhat more rational."
The President continued, "American[s] are grieving with you, and Americans are worried because we know this is not an easy field to navigate. I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion at the hospital in Gaza yesterday, and based on what I have seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you. But there's a lot that's not sure, so we've got to overcome a lot of things. And that also means encouraging life-saving capacity to help the Palestinians who are innocents caught in the middle of this."
