The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has announced the emergence of a new summit lava dome in the crater of Mayon Volcano.

This development comes as the pre-existing lava dome has been pushed out in increments, resulting in rockfall incidents during the first week of June.

According to data from the Mayon Volcano Network, a total of 59 rockfall events were recorded in the last 24 hours, with a cumulative count of 579 since June 1.

Visual evidence of the new summit lava dome was captured in photographs taken by the Mayon Volcano Observatory at 5:45 a.m. this morning.

The formation of a new summit lava dome raises concerns about increased volcanic activity and the potential for further hazardous events.

As a precautionary measure, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has declared a state of calamity in the province of Albay, where Mayon Volcano is located.

The President urges the residents of Albay, particularly the Bikolano community, to strictly adhere to the recommendations and evacuation instructions provided by local authorities to ensure the safety of everyone.

Efforts to evacuate families residing within the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone are ongoing, with individuals being transported to designated evacuation centers.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is ready to provide assistance, with a PHP 114 million Quick Response Fund available at the DSWD Central Office, PHP 5 million funds available at DSWD Field Office Region V, and 179,000 Family Food Packs available in Disaster Response Centers.

In addition to these preparations, inter-agency coordination and cooperation among agencies such as the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), PHIVOLCS, and others, will continue to ensure a unified response to the situation.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates on the volcanic activity in Mayon Volcano. The public is advised to stay informed through official channels and to follow the guidance of local authorities to prioritize their safety and well-being during this time of heightened volcanic activity.
