President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced his plans to initiate significant structural changes within the Department of Agriculture (DA) before stepping down as its Secretary. His goal is to ensure food security in the country and improve the efficiency of the agricultural sector.
During a media interview after the formal turnover ceremony in Valenzuela City, where the Chinese government donated 20,000 metric tons of urea fertilizers to the Philippines, President Marcos expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the agricultural sector since assuming the role of DA Secretary.
"We have really managed to make some very important structural changes in the Department of Agriculture. We are doing this gradually. At the beginning of this year, we faced a crisis in terms of food supply, food prices, and fertilizer prices. That's why this donation from China is significant," Marcos explained.
The President envisions implementing efficient systems within the agriculture department to ensure food security before his departure from the agency.
"My aspiration for the DA is that when I leave, we will have systems in place to guarantee the food supply of the Philippines, ensure affordable prices, and enable our farmers to make a good living," Marcos emphasized.
"Until we achieve those goals, I suppose you will just have to put up with me as DA Secretary," he added.
Marcos, in his capacity as Agriculture Secretary, has already implemented emergency measures to support and assist farmers.
"The prices of agricultural commodities are beginning to stabilize. Now, we are going to focus on making the necessary structural changes to increase production and ensure the food supply of the Philippines, not only in terms of rice but also corn, fisheries, and livestock," Marcos explained.
"We are taking these actions to avoid reaching a crisis situation like the one we experienced after the pandemic," the President concluded.
