President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. participated in the Department of Education's (DepEd) annual Brigada Eskwela program on Monday, lending his support to the preparations at Victorino Mapa High School in Barangay San Miguel, City of Manila. The event was also attended by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, teachers, volunteers, and education stakeholders.

During the event, President Marcos highlighted the significance of collective efforts in ensuring a conducive learning environment for Filipino students. He expressed his appreciation for the dedication of parents, teachers, volunteers, and all those involved in the education system who contribute to enhancing the educational experience of children. He emphasized the importance of this year's Brigada Eskwela as it marks a step towards normalcy following the challenges posed by the pandemic.

President Marcos toured the school premises and actively participated in cleaning and painting classrooms alongside Vice President Duterte and other volunteers. He was briefed by officials on the ongoing maintenance works aimed at preparing the school for the upcoming opening of classes on August 29.

In addition to his hands-on involvement, President Marcos donated PhP1 million to the school and provided paint and cleaning materials to support the Brigada Eskwela program.

Brigada Eskwela, launched in 2003, is an annual nationwide initiative that promotes community engagement in maintaining and improving school facilities. The program fosters partnerships among parents, teachers, school personnel, alumni, civic groups, non-government organizations (NGOs), local government units (LGUs), private individuals, and students.

Participants volunteer their time, skills, and resources to undertake tasks such as cleaning, carpentry, painting, minor repairs, and maintenance within the school premises.

This year's Brigada Eskwela carries the theme "Bayanihan para sa Matatag na Paaralan" and is set to run for six days, concluding on August 19. The Department of Education reported receiving approximately PhP44 million in donations from partners to support the implementation of the program in public schools nationwide.

The DepEd welcomed a total of 28.4 million learners for School Year 2022-2023, marking the resumption of full in-person classes and extracurricular activities. This move reflects the administration's commitment to learning recovery and providing quality education to Filipino students.

The national kickoff for Brigada Eskwela 2023 took place on August 7 at Tarlac National High School and will continue its activities until August 19. This program continues to be a driving force in promoting volunteerism and fostering collaboration among education stakeholders to ensure the success of public elementary and secondary schools across the country.
