President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. revealed that the initial phase of safety and efficacy trials for the African swine fever (ASF) vaccine has been completed successfully. The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has confirmed that the vaccine produces sufficient antibodies and is safe for use.
This breakthrough paves the way for the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a certificate of product registration (CPR) for the vaccine, while the second phase of trials is already underway.
President Marcos expressed his optimism about this development during the opening of the Livestock Philippines Expo 2023 held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. While acknowledging the long-awaited progress, he emphasized the need for caution, citing expert warnings that the vaccine is 80 percent effective, leaving a 20 percent chance of further attention and monitoring.
The President also highlighted the government's efforts in procuring Avian Influenza vaccines. The BAI has called on manufacturers to register their products with the FDA, and guidelines for administering the vaccine are being finalized.
In his speech, President Marcos acknowledged the challenges faced by the poultry and livestock sectors, particularly the impact of ASF and Avian Influenza. He mentioned the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) Program, which has benefited over 430 farmers' cooperatives and associations, along with thousands of individual farmers.
President Marcos expressed the government's commitment to finding solutions for the agricultural sector's challenges. He assured farmers of assistance in increasing their incomes and improving their quality of life. The President stressed the implementation of data and science-based policies and programs, aiming to streamline the value chain systems, improve access to local produce, and mitigate the impact of food inflation on farmers and consumers.
Furthermore, President Marcos encouraged collaboration among concerned government agencies and stakeholders to share ideas, practices, and technologies that will advance the poultry and livestock industries. He praised the Department of Agriculture and Informa Markets Asia for successfully organizing the Livestock Philippines Expo 2023, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in expanding and modernizing these sectors.
