PBBM Discusses Security situation in meeting with US Senators

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with members of the US Senate on Wednesday to discuss a range of issues that impact the relationship between the Philippines and the United States. The discussions centered on security, defense, agriculture, climate change mitigation, economic cooperation, and cybersecurity.

During the meeting, President Marcos thanked Sen. Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and other members of the panel for hosting his delegation and facilitating the productive discussions. Marcos emphasized that engagements between Manila and Washington should not be limited to the executive branch but should also include members of the legislature.

Defense and security engagement were identified as the key pillars of Philippines-US bilateral relations during the meeting, and the President expressed his appreciation for the US government's willingness to work with the Philippine government as an equal, sovereign partner. Additionally, the President expressed the Philippines' interest in deepening cooperation with the US in the areas of supply chain, health and health security, environment, energy security, and interconnectivity.

The meeting was part of President Marcos' official visit to Washington, following a series of high-level dialogues with US President Joseph Biden and US Vice President Kamala Harris. Joining the President at the Capitol Hill meeting were Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique A. Manalo, Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel G. Romualdez, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla, and Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual.

Among those who joined Sen. Menendez were Senator James Risch, SFRC Ranking Member, and other officials of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The meeting highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between the two nations on various fronts and signaled the commitment of both countries to strengthen their long standing relationship.
