President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has given his approval for an extension in the consolidation of franchises under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

The announcement comes following a recommendation from Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, granting an additional three months until April 30, 2024, for interested parties to participate in the consolidation process.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) conveyed the President's decision in a statement released on Wednesday, stating, “This extension is to give an opportunity to those who expressed intention to consolidate but did not make the previous cut-off."

According to the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB), a total of 190,000 public utility vehicles, including UV Express, PUJs, mini-buses, and buses, have already availed of the consolidation process.

As of mid-January, consolidation figures stood at 82 percent for UV express, 75 percent for jeepneys, 86 percent for buses, and 45 percent for mini-buses.

Since the initiation of the modernization program in 2017, the government has established 1,728 cooperatives and corporations, boasting a membership of 262,344 individuals.

The primary objective of the PUVMP is to address the pressing transportation challenges faced by the country and prepare for future demands.

The comprehensive program seeks to transform the public transport system, making commuting and transportation operations more dignified, humane, and aligned with global standards.
