President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has officially extended the tenure of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Benjamin Acorda Jr. until March 31, 2024. This decision comes in recognition of Acorda's successful leadership of the police force since his appointment in April of the current year.
In a letter addressed to Acorda, President Marcos stated, "I wish to inform you that, pursuant to the provisions of existing laws, your service as Chief (Police General), Philippine National Police, is hereby extended until 31 March 2024." The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abajos Jr. was also notified through a transmittal letter dated December 1, 2023, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.
The extension of Acorda's service is grounded in Executive Order No. 136, series of 1999, which grants the President the authority to approve extensions for presidential appointees beyond the compulsory retirement age for commendable reasons.
Under Acorda's leadership, the PNP has prioritized initiatives such as Personnel Morale and Welfare, Community Engagement, Integrity Enhancement, ICT Development, and Honest Law Enforcement Operations.
General Acorda, appointed as the 29th Chief of the PNP by President Marcos in a ceremony at Camp Crame, Quezon City on April 24, 2023, reached the mandatory retirement age of 56 on December 3, 2023.
Acorda, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Sambisig Class of 1991, has dedicated nearly 37 years to serving in the PNP, previously holding the position of director of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence before assuming the role of PNP Chief.
