PBBM Firm in 'Punishing' Suspects in Degamo Assassination

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. condemned the killing of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and said the suspects "cannot go unpunished."
In a chance interview with the media, the President said the killing was "entirely unacceptable" and that the case "does not belong in the society." He added that the investigation into the slay case is going well, and the suspects "cannot go unpunished."
The President also ordered the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to identify "political hotspots" in the country in the wake of recent attacks that targeted elective local government officials, including Governor Degamo.
He instructed the DILG to examine areas that have become "main hotspots" and conduct a dragnet to capture the remaining suspects.The Philippine National Police (PNP) is getting closer to identifying those behind the attack that resulted in the death of Governor Degamo and eight others. Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said four suspects have expressed willingness to cooperate with investigators.
On Monday's plenary session, March 6, 2023, Sen. Cynthia A. Villar delivered her co-sponsorship speech to express her profound sympathy and sincere condolences to the family of the victims.
She urged all law enforcement agencies to conduct a speedy investigation to identify and arrest all perpetrators who instigated the attack on the governor, as well as those who carried out the shooting.
"We call on our law enforcement agencies to act with dispatch and fast track the investigation to truthfully identify and catch not just the perpetrators who brutally shot the victims, but also the mastermind/s who instigated the attack on the governor so that all of them may be held accountable for the atrocity they have committed and so that they may no longer be allowed to do other acts of violence unto others," Villar said.
Villar also honored Gov. Degamo for his exceptional qualities as a public servant, citing his kindness, generosity, competence, diligence, hard work, patriotism, and bravery. She acknowledged the governor's humble beginnings as a fisherman's son who persevered and worked hard to equip himself with the skills and qualities he needed to serve his community.
The attack on Governor Degamo and his companions has sent shockwaves across the nation, with many expressing their condolences and calling for justice to be served.
