President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is looking to adopt cutting-edge micro nuclear fuel technology to address the power crisis in the Philippines.

The move came after the President met with officials from the Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC), a US-based firm that specializes in nuclear technologies and services.

In a meeting held in Washington, CEO Francesco Venneri expressed interest in bringing reliable and clean nuclear energy to the Philippines. He noted that the move is a critical way for the company to enter the market. The USNC is reportedly considering the Philippines for its first nuclear energy facility in Southeast Asia and has vowed to help solve the recent blackouts experienced by several areas of the country.

The micro modular reactor (MMR) energy system, a fourth-generation nuclear energy system that delivers safe, clean, and cost-effective electricity to users, is being licensed in Canada and the US. It is considered the first "fission battery" in commercialization.

According to USNC officials, the company anticipates heavy demand for its MMRs and nuclear fuel in the future and envisions the Philippines as its nuclear hub in the region. The Marcos administration has identified an unhampered supply of energy, along with the promotion and utilization of renewable energy sources, as a top priority.

Earlier, the administration acted swiftly on the power crisis in Occidental Mindoro by operating at least three power stations to provide 24-hour electricity power service in the province. With the adoption of nuclear technology, the administration aims to realize a sufficient and clean energy supply in the future.
