Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza provided insights into President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s upcoming State Visit to Malaysia.
They announced that President Marcos will be conducting a State Visit to from July 25 to 27, 2023, after receiving an invitation from the King of Malaysia. During his visit, President Marcos Jr. is expected to have a royal audience with Malaysian King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and hold a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The primary focus of these meetings is to identify new areas of cooperation and strengthen people-to-people exchanges between the Philippines and Malaysia.
Key highlights of the State Visit include a meeting with prominent Filipino and Malaysian business leaders to enhance bilateral trade and investments, with the goal of exploring economic opportunities for the Filipino people. Furthermore, President Marcos Jr. will meet with the Filipino community living in Malaysia to personally inform them of his administration's plans and programs for Overseas Filipinos.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Malaysia, making the State Visit even more significant for both nations. During the press briefing, it was highlighted that bilateral cooperation in priority areas will be pursued, including agriculture, food security, tourism, and the digital economy. Additionally, new areas of cooperation, such as the halal industry and Islamic banking, will be explored during the visit.
Responding to inquiries about the delegation accompanying President Marcos Jr., it was confirmed that First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, key Cabinet officials including Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, the country's economic team, and a business delegation will accompany him. The specific names of the delegation members will be released closer to the date of the visit by the PCO.
When asked about the recently signed Maharlika Investment Fund, DFA Spokesperson Daza suggested that it may be raised and promoted during President Marcos Jr.'s State Visit to Malaysia.
Regarding the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), it is expected that President Marcos Jr. will address and discuss the government's programs to promote the welfare of migrant workers during his meetings with the Filipino community residing and working in Kuala Lumpur.
The visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral ties between the Philippines and Malaysia, promoting the Philippines as an attractive trade, investment, and tourist destination. The State Visit is eagerly anticipated by both nations, and it is expected to yield fruitful outcomes for mutual cooperation and growth.
