Petro Gazz Angels secured their spot in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference semifinals after beating the Akari Chargers, 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, in a thrilling match at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Thursday.
The Angels relied on the explosive performance of Grethcel Soltones, who scored 20 points, to repel the resilient Chargers. Aiza Pontillas added 15 markers, while Remy Palma scored 13 points, and Jonah Sabete and MJ Phillips put in 11 and 10 hits, respectively, to help Petro Gazz clinch their fifth victory of the season and tie idle F2 Logistics at second place.
Despite the loss, Akari put up a strong fight, with Erika Raagas scoring 19 points, but no other Charger scored in double figures with Dindin Manabat settling for nine hits on in-and-out stints in the last two sets. Joy Soyud finished with seven markers while Janine Marciano wound up with six points.
The Angels had a convincing win in the first two sets, but the Chargers made a fast start in the third, seizing an 8-3 lead. Although the Angels tied the score at 12, the Chargers moved to set point at 24-21 on Janine Marciano’s back-to-back kills before snaring the win on a Krich Macaslang attack.
Petro Gazz regained their composure early in the fourth set, and MJ Phillips anchored the Angels’ romp, scoring on a quick play before foiling Camille Victoria upfront to help stretch Petro Gazz’s lead to 19-11. Phillips hammered out a vicious kill that made it 22-14, and the Angels coasted to victory aided by Marciano’s attack that hit the antenna at the finish.
Petro Gazz Coach Oliver Almadro said that their goal was to reach the semifinals first, and they worked hard to achieve it. He also expressed his gratitude to the team and their supporters and said that if the Lord would give them the opportunity to be in the finals, they would be happy.
The Angels have already clinched a spot in the semifinals and can afford to drop their last game against the Chery Tiggo Crossovers next Tuesday in Iloilo City as they have amassed superior tiebreak points over the other semifinal contenders. Meanwhile, the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers must win over the Army Lady Troopers to secure the third semifinals slot.
