In a bid to provide safe, modern, and eco-friendly transportation options, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced a series of initiatives aimed at popularizing electric vehicles (EVs) across the Philippines.
Speaking at the launch of Dongfeng Motors in Pasig City, the President emphasized the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance sustainability.
President Marcos stated, "Considering our continued dependence on imported fuels and the volatility of oil products in the world market, it is only sensible that we encourage the shift to electric vehicles. We not only get savings in fuel and gas, but also significantly lessen our greenhouse gas emissions and champion sustainability in our day-to-day activities."
The government has introduced various measures and incentives to promote the use of electric vehicles in the country. President Marcos announced an ambitious goal to increase the share of electric vehicles to 10 percent, with hopes to reach 50 percent by 2040.
As of late 2020, there were only around 8,800 electric vehicles in the Philippines. To boost this number, the government is working on a gradual shift to electric vehicles for public transportation.
The Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program is currently in effect, offering beneficiaries special loan facilities and equity subsidies for acquiring electric vehicles.
"To date, nearly 400 electric public utility vehicles are plying 29 routes nationwide, bringing safe, modern, comfortable, and green transportation to the masses," President Marcos noted.
Electric vehicle ownership in the Philippines comes with a range of incentives, including priority in vehicle registration and exemption from number coding schemes.
The move towards electric vehicles aligns with the Philippines' commitment to the Paris Agreement. The country pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent in agriculture, waste management, industry, transport, and energy sectors from 2020 to 2030.
