In a successful conclusion to a nine-day maritime patrol near Bajo De Masinloc, the 97-meter Philippine Coast Guard Vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, assured the safety of Filipino fishermen. Deployed on February 1, 2024, by CG Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, the mission aimed to protect fishermen from harassment and uphold the Philippines' sovereignty over the area.
Affirming Philippine sovereignty over Bajo De Masinloc and its territorial sea, the vessel operated within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in line with UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award. The PCG's activities aligned with national laws, emphasizing the country's position on the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
During the patrol, the PCG vessel closely monitored and supported 100 Filipino fishermen in 14 boats, distributing essential supplies in the traditional fishing ground of Bajo De Masinloc. Grateful fishermen highlighted the PCG's presence, expressing confidence in continuing their activities despite regional tensions.
Encountering four Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels and four Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM) vessels, the PCG vessel faced multiple instances of dangerous maneuvers. Despite provocations, the PCG maintained professionalism, engaging both CCG and CMM vessels through radio communication, emphasizing the Philippines' principled position in accordance with international law.
