President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. convened a special Command Conference today, bringing together national security and defense clusters, to address the latest violation of Philippine sovereignty by China.
The Philippine government strongly condemns China's recent aggression, viewing it as a blatant violation of international law and an unwarranted intrusion into Philippine territorial waters.
During the conference, President Marcos emphasized the seriousness of the situation, highlighting the use of brute force by China and the urgent need for a unified response. The President called for a press conference to provide a clear and factual account of the incident, revealing the deliberate obfuscation of truth by the Chinese government.
On Saturday, October 22, 2023, at 06:04 local time, within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines, Chinese Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels harassed and intentionally hit the Philippine vessels Unaizah May 2 and PCG Coast Guard vessel BRP Cabra.
The Department of National Defense Secretary GIlbert Teodoro said that this incident, a clear violation of international law, occurred despite China lacking jurisdiction, authority, or right to conduct operations within the 200-mile exclusive economic zone of the Philippines.
Secretary Teodoro said that the Philippine government summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian to condemn China's reckless and illegal actions. Similarly, Philippine Ambassador to China Jaime FlorCruz was instructed to convey the condemnation to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Philippine Coast Guard has initiated a maritime investigation in accordance with international maritime safety regulations.
