In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the Philippine Embassy in Israel said it is taking comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the region.
In a press briefing held at Malacañang on Wednesday October 11,2023, Philippine Ambassador to Israel Pedro Laylo Jr. provided an update on the embassy's efforts and reassured OFWs and their families in the Philippines.
Laylo stated, "We take this opportunity to assure not just our kababayan here in Israel, but also their families there in the Philippines who we know are anxious to find out how their loved ones are coping in this difficult time."
The embassy said it is working closely with Israeli authorities to locate OFWs and the Filipino community affected by the Israel-Hamas conflict. Laylo reported that the Israeli military has successfully regained control of the communities previously infiltrated by Hamas militants.
"Despite sporadic rocket attacks and the distressing images, you see in the news and on social media, these depict only certain areas in Israel, particularly in areas surrounding the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military has retaken control of the communities infiltrated by Hamas militants," Laylo explained.
He noted that rocket attacks have significantly diminished, except in southern Israel. He said that this development allows people to move more freely in areas far from the combat zone, and the embassy has resumed its regular operations since Sunday.
However, due to the strict travel restrictions enforced by the Israeli government, Laylo asked for understanding as immediate assistance to the victims may be challenging. He said that the embassy has established protocols for those who wish to be evacuated.
