The President emphasized that the well-being of the seafarers is a top priority, with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) closely coordinating efforts with counterparts in Iran, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to gather real-time updates on the situation.

President Marcos stated, “Our seafarers are not alone. The government is doing everything in our power to bring them safely home.” He highlighted the ongoing communication between the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the families of the hostages, assuring them of the government’s unwavering support and assistance during this challenging time.

The hostage situation unfolded when Yemeni rebels seized the cargo vessel Galaxy Leader, holding its 25 crew members, including the 17 Filipinos, captive. The rebels claim the act is in retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza.

The Galaxy Leader, a Bahamas-flagged and British-owned ship with connections to Israeli businessman Abraham “Rami” Ungar, is operated by a Japanese firm.

In an official statement, the DMW reiterated its commitment to supporting the families of the seafarers and providing all necessary assistance. Meanwhile, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, with the United States calling for the immediate release of the ship and its crew.

In a significant development, the U.S. government is contemplating designating Houthi rebels as a terrorist organization following the incident in the Red Sea.
