In a nail-biting conclusion to the Opening Round of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group C, Canada, Japan, Italy, and the Philippines emerged as the top four teams, setting the stage for intense playoffs to secure the two coveted tickets to the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2024.
The fourth day of the tournament in Buttrio and Castions di Strada, located in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, witnessed high drama and excitement as teams battled through challenging weather conditions to secure their positions.
Tuesday's play began with weather disruptions, causing delays in the schedule. Stormy conditions persisted until midday, but the determined teams and organizers persevered. The skies eventually cleared, allowing the matches to take place under sunny conditions. Originally planning to conclude the Opening Round at Castions di Strada, the decision to keep Buttrio in use on Tuesday resulted in the last four Opening Round games being played simultaneously across both venues.
Canada and Japan showcased their dominance from the outset, securing victories against New Zealand and Venezuela, respectively. Japan further solidified its position by defeating Italy, securing a spot in the top three for the upcoming playoffs.
The highlight of the day came when the Philippines claimed a remarkable last-minute victory over Italy in the final game of the Opening Round. The game had been postponed from the previous day due to a thunderstorm and resumed on Tuesday evening. The Philippines' triumphant walk-off win booked them the fourth spot in the playoffs, creating a captivating narrative for the upcoming matches.
The results of Day Four determined the playoff lineup, with Canada and Japan finishing in the top two positions and securing their places in the finals. Italy, despite defeating all other teams except Japan, had to settle for the third spot. They will face the Philippines in the 3rd vs. 4th playoff game on Wednesday.
New Zealand and Venezuela finished in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, and will face each other in the 5th–6th Placement Game tomorrow, July 27, 2023.
The closeness of the matches in Group C was evident, as a win for Italy against the Philippines would have seen Venezuela clinch the fourth spot and remain in contention for a place in the Finals 2024.
