The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swiftly responded to a distress call today as the MV ESPERANZA STAR, a passenger-cargo vessel, caught fire in the waters off Panglao. The incident prompted a large-scale operation involving firefighting and rescue efforts.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vessel, under the command of Captain Desiderio Labiste Jr., was carrying approximately 120 passengers and crew members at the time of the incident. MV ESPERANZA STAR had departed from the Port of Lazi in Siquijor and was en route to the Port of Tagbilaran in Bohol.

The PCG immediately mobilized its assets and personnel to the scene, including the BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403), the Coast Guard Sub-Station Tagbilaran, and the Coast Guard Special Operations Unit-Tagbilaran. These units are actively engaged in firefighting and rescue operations to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
