In a resolute display of sovereignty and determination, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) achieved a significant feat by escorting two Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs) to support the Rotation and Resupply (RoRe) operation led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to Ayungin Shoal. The operation, which took place on August 22, 2023, aimed to replenish troops stationed aboard the BRP Sierra Madre despite disruptive attempts by China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels and Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM) boats.
The PCG's vessels, namely BRP Cabra and BRP Sindangan, provided a protective shield to the indigenous supply boats used by the AFP to transport essential provisions. The mission's success was achieved despite continuous efforts by CCG and CMM vessels to obstruct, harass, and impede the resupply effort.
The collaborative effort between the PCG and the AFP not only facilitated the secure delivery of vital supplies to the dedicated service members stationed at Ayungin Shoal but also highlighted the Philippines' unwavering commitment to upholding its sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea. This steadfast determination was emphasized by Coast Guard Admiral Artemio Abu, the PCG Commandant, who acknowledged the combined determination of both forces in asserting their rights.
Coast Guard Admiral Abu underlined the PCG's dedication to upholding international maritime laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the 2016 Arbitral Ruling, and COLREGS. The PCG's call for all parties to cease illegal activities in Philippine maritime zones echoes its commitment to maintaining maritime safety and security for all.
During the operation, the Philippine Navy's vessels remained on standby, ready to assist if the need arose. The successful mission underscored the strength of the Philippines' armed forces and coast guard in the face of challenges to its territorial integrity.
