The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has increased its presence and operations in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) in response to the directive of President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.
To strengthen this effort, PCG Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, has deployed the BRP TERESA MAGBANUA (MRRV-9701), one of the PCG Fleet's largest maritime assets, to the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG).
Following its deployment on January 28, 2023, the crew of MRRV-9701 boarded Filipino Fishing Boats (FFBs) in the KIG and surrounding waters to advise Filipino fishermen and crew to radio PCG or Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) shore units for any needed assistance. As the summer season approaches, the PCG anticipates a significant increase in the number of Filipino fishing vessels operating in the WPS.
The increased PCG presence and operations in the WPS aim to protect the country's maritime sovereignty and security, promote safety and security for all maritime activities, and enhance maritime law enforcement and environmental protection. The PCG will continue to work with other government agencies to monitor and safeguard Philippine waters.
