The 24 members of the Philippine Senate adopted Resolution No. 718 which denounces the continued harassment of Filipino fishermen and the persistent incursions in the West Philippine Sea. The resolution calls on the Philippine government to take decisive action in asserting and securing the country's sovereign rights over its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Co-sponsored by Senate President Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri and Senator Risa Hontiveros, the resolution aims to bring China's actions to international attention, urging the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to address the issue and seek global support for the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
The Senate emphasizes the importance of proper consensus and consultations among colleagues, transcending political affiliations for the sake of the country's sovereignty. Hontiveros highlights the determination of the Filipino people never to be bullied into submission when it comes to matters of national importance.
The resolution outlines a course of action for the DFA, which includes continuing dialogues with the Chinese government, utilizing international fora to rally multilateral support, and engaging like-minded countries to call for respect of the Hague Ruling and the UNCLOS. The Senate also proposes filing a Resolution before the United Nations General Assembly to halt all activities that harass Philippine vessels and violate the country's established rights in the West Philippine Sea.
