United States Senator Tammy Duckworth visited the Philippines and held discussions with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. regarding potential collaboration on the production of electric vehicle batteries.
During her courtesy call in Malacañang, Duckworth highlighted the massive demand for electric vehicle batteries in the American market and proposed a partnership with the Philippines to address this need.
Duckworth's meeting with President Marcos covered various aspects of renewable energy transition and challenges faced by the United States. She emphasized the critical role of electronic vehicle batteries in enabling the switch to renewable energy sources. According to Duckworth, the Philippines presents an ideal opportunity to establish a new manufacturing ecosystem for these batteries due to its friendly ties with the US and availability of crucial mineral deposits required for battery production, including nickel, bauxite, and cobalt.
President Marcos expressed enthusiasm about the potential for battery manufacturing in the Philippines, citing the country's rich mineral resources. He highlighted the importance of batteries in stabilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are dependent on natural conditions. Marcos mentioned the intention to not only meet local battery demand but also explore export opportunities to other countries and markets.
The discussions also underscored the longstanding relationship between the Philippines and the US. President Marcos emphasized the need to further strengthen and deepen these ties, especially in light of geopolitical volatility in the region and around the world. Duckworth's visit allowed both parties to explore avenues for common security, trade interests, and legislative support.
Duckworth, a member of various US Senate committees including Armed Services, Environment & Public Works, Commerce, Science & Transportation, and Small Business & Entrepreneurship, expressed optimism about collaborating with the Philippines.
The partnership holds the potential to bolster the Philippines' defense and law enforcement capabilities, facilitate trade and investment opportunities, and enhance strategic cooperation between the two nations.
