The Philippines has claimed its first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup victory by defeating co-hosts New Zealand with a scoreline of 1-0.

The match, held at the Wellington Regional Stadium, witnessed a momentous performance by the Filipinas as Sarina Bolden's decisive goal in the 24th minute etched her name in football history.

The confident Kiwis, riding high from their historic win against Norway in the tournament opener, were taken aback when the Filipinas struck early with a remarkable goal.

Bolden's precise header not only secured the Philippines' maiden goal in the competition but also marked the first goal scored by any debutant team in the 2023 edition of the tournament.

Throughout the game, the Football Ferns relentlessly pushed for an equalizer, and their efforts nearly paid off in the 69th minute when Jacqui Hand found the net after an excellent cross from Hannah Wilkinson. However, the goal was disallowed as Wilkinson was ruled offside, further adding to New Zealand's frustrations.

As the match neared its conclusion, Grace Jale made a valiant effort to equalize, but her shot was brilliantly saved by Philippines' goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, who was later named the VISA Player of the Match for her outstanding performance.
