PNP, AFP Joint Operations In Marawi City Neutralized Two High-Profile Extremist Terrorists

In a successful joint law enforcement operation conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on June 14, 2023, in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, two high-profile extremist terrorists were neutralized. The operation, which targeted individuals affiliated with extremist groups, resulted in the elimination of key threats to national security and the injury of military personnel.
One of the primary targets of the operation was Faharudin Hadji Benito Satar, also known as Faharudin Pumbaya Pangalian or Abu Zacharia Amir, the leader of ISIS Philippines and the Overall Amir of the Islamic State-East Asia. The second target was Joharie Sandab, known as Abu Mursid, who served as the sub-leader and finance officer of the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group.
The joint operation involved various units, including the 4th Light Reaction Company (LRC) of the Joint Special Operations Unit 4 (JSOU4), the 7th Scout Ranger Company (SRC), the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion (SRB), Task Force Marawi, the Philippine Army Aviation Regiment (AIR, PA), the 14th Military Intelligence Company (MICO), the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion (1MIB), the 84th Special Action Company (84SAC) of the Special Action Force (SAF), the Military Intelligence Group 21 (MIG21) of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), and the Regional Special Operational Team 9 of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), PNP. All units operated under the supervision of the 103rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army.
During the operation, the targeted individuals engaged the operating troops, opening fire and detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) consisting of a 60mm mortar and two hand grenades. In response, the troops returned fire, resulting in the neutralization of the two high-profile terrorists. Unfortunately, Private First Class Chrismar D Tongpala sustained injuries during the encounter and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The operation also yielded significant recoveries, including five high-powered firearms, ammunition, and explosive devices. The recovered items included an M16 rifle with ammunition, a Glock 17 Pistol with ammunition, fired cartridge cases, a 60mm mortar without a tail pin and fuse, and a fuse assembly grenade.
PNP Chief, Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr., directed the personnel of the Provincial Intelligence Team (PIT) of Lanao del Sur to monitor the incident's development in coordination with the Marawi City Police Station. He emphasized that the operation was conducted based on prior information gathered by the unit, indicating a planned meeting between Faharudin Hadji Satar, Nasser Daud, and their sub-leader Joharie Sandab, along with several unidentified members of the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group in Barangay Ayong, Pagayawan, Lanao del Sur on June 11, 2023.
