In anticipation of the highly anticipated 19th Edition of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup 2023, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all participants, officials, and spectators. With the event set to take place from August 25 to September 10, 2023, the PNP has reassured the public of its readiness by implementing a proven major events security framework.
Police General Benjamin C Acorda Jr., the Chief of the PNP, expressed his confidence in the PNP's ability to provide a safe and secure environment for the 2023 FIBA World Cup. He emphasized that the security strategy, which has been successfully employed in past international events such as the 2015 APEC Summit, 2015 Papal Visit, 2017 ASEAN Summit, and the 2020 Miss Universe Pageant, will serve as the template for the upcoming basketball tournament.
To ensure effective security operations and public safety services during the event, the Security Task Force (STF) FBWC 2023 has been established as the primary body responsible. Acting Deputy Chief PNP for Operations (TADCO) will serve as the Overall Supervisor, while the Acting Director for Operations (TADO) will assume the role of Commander. The STF FBWC 2023 will collaborate with various organizations, including the Philippine Sports Commission, FBWC 2023 LOC, SBP, local government units, stakeholders, and other relevant agencies.
The 19th Edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup will be hosted across three nations in Asia: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. The Philippines, specifically, will host participants from Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. With a total of 3,253 FBWC customer groups expected to participate, ensuring a secure environment is crucial for the success of the event.
The tournament will commence with an opening ceremony and opening games between Angola vs. Italy and Philippines vs. Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena in Ciudad de Victoria, Sta Maria, Bulacan.
"The PNP is fully committed to the success of this prestigious international event. We are working closely with our partner agencies to deliver a secure and memorable experience for everyone involved," stated the Chief PNP.
PBGEN Redrico A Maranan, Chief of the Public Information Office, stressed the significance of collaboration and vigilance throughout the event. As the head spokesperson for the STF FBWC 2023, he assured the public of timely and accurate information regarding the implemented security measures. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Acknowledging the potential threats posed by local and international threat groups during large-scale events, the PNP's mission is to achieve "zero incidents" and safeguard the lives of FBWC 2023 delegates, officials, participants, and spectators. The PNP is fully dedicated to ensuring the uninterrupted conduct of the event while closely collaborating with all stakeholders.
