In a bid to address global conflicts and advocate for peace, Pope Francis engaged in a 20-minute conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday afternoon. The discussion focused on the various conflicts around the world and the urgent necessity of identifying pathways towards peace.

The Holy See Press Office confirmed the exchange between the Pope and the President, underscoring their shared concern for the conflicts that continue to afflict numerous regions.

Earlier on the same Sunday, Pope Francis reiterated his appeals for peace and restraint in the ongoing war in the Holy Land. During his Angelus prayer, he expressed his deep concern and sorrow for those enduring the hardships of conflict, including hostages, casualties, and their affected families.

The Pope specifically lamented the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza and the recent incidents at the Anglican hospital and Greek Orthodox parish in the region. He emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach those in need and the release of hostages.

Moreover, Pope Francis extended his call for peace beyond the Holy Land, addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine. He emphasized that any conflict, regardless of its location, represents a failure and the destruction of human fraternity. His poignant message resonated with a plea for an end to all conflicts worldwide, stating unequivocally, "War always is a defeat, it is a destruction of human fraternity. Brothers, stop! Stop!"

President Joe Biden made a brief visit to Tel Aviv on October 18th with the aim of negotiating an agreement to permit humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt. This visit followed a surprise attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th, which resulted in substantial casualties.

While limited amounts of humanitarian assistance have begun to enter Gaza, the United Nations has emphasized that the aid provided so far only addresses a fraction of the immense needs in the region.
