In the ongoing resolution of power issues in Panay Island, authorities provide an update on the restoration efforts. As of 11:00 AM today(January 4,2024) the combined power output stands at 242.1 MW, sourced from Panay power plants (209.5 MW) and other Visayas-based facilities (32.6 MW).
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) attributes the recent power interruption to unscheduled maintenance shutdowns of major power plants on Panay Island. Emphasizing the necessity for enhanced planning, NGCP underscores the importance of a well-balanced mix of fuels and technology to ensure sufficient generation per island. The focus is on conservatively restoring loads, matching them with the available generation, to prevent recurrent voltage failures. NGCP clarifies its role, stating that it transmits power but does not generate it.
In response, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a reminder to NGCP, emphasizing its responsibilities as the system operator (SO) to guarantee supply security and grid reliability.
Simultaneously, the DOE maintains continuous coordination with NGCP, affected power plants, and distribution utilities on the status of power plants. This includes monitoring the estimated timeline for the full restoration of power supply to the affected areas.
