In an effort to combat rice smuggling and hoarding plaguing the Philippines, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a directive, calling upon all officials, authorities, and government agencies to rigorously enforce policies and laws aimed at addressing rice-related issues in the country.

During a speech delivered at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila, President Marcos said that hoarders, smugglers, and unscrupulous rice price manipulators are the true culprits responsible for disrupting the delicate balance between rice supply and demand.

"Ang bukbok na lubos na sumisira sa balanse ng supply at presyo ng bigas sa merkado [ay] ang hoarding at saka ang smuggling, at price manipulation na ginagawa ng mapagsamantalang mga negosyante," stated President Marcos.

He assured the public that the government would relentlessly pursue smugglers to “secure an affordable staple food for all citizens.”

President Marcos also stated that there is an ample supply of rice in the country, highlighting the need for effective production and distribution management.

He pointed out that the rice harvest in the second quarter of the year exceeded the previous year's output.

President Marcos led the distribution of rice to 1,000 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), with each recipient receiving 25 kilograms of rice.

These 1,000 sacks of rice were part of the 42,180 sacks confiscated by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) in an operation in Zamboanga City. After the importers failed to prove the legality of the rice's importation, it was donated to the DSWD.
