MANILA, PHILIPPINES - President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has given instructions to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to expedite the cleanup of the oil spill caused by the sinking of the motor tanker (MT) Princess Empress.

The DENR has announced its intention to utilize the participants of the Balikatan exercise and has received support from Japan and South Korea to contain the oil spill.

The agency is also working with local government units, the vessel owner, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development for further support, particularly in providing funds for the cash-for-work program in the affected municipalities.

The oil spill occurred on February 28, 2023, when the MT Princess Empress sank in the waters off the coast of Oriental Mindoro. The oil spill has affected several coastal areas and is threatening the livelihoods of many residents in the area. Scientists also project that the oil spill may reach Antique and Palawan.
